Two hundred and four days – through tropical heat, arctic cold, gale force winds, dust storms, rain (it even rained mud!) – all balanced by wonderful support and hospitality from major sponsors, Rotarians, Rotary clubs, government (local, state and federal), police forces and the general public. That support, particularly the Rotary support is what made the difference. We have a network in Rotary that would be hard to match.
The participants tell of an increased awareness in the general public of the issues around mental illness and the need for increased research into its causes and treatment. A huge increase in the recognition of Rotary and Australian Rotary Health and their contribution to the wellbeing of the Australian Community was widely acknowledged. Finally, it was the satisfaction of all who participated and supported the GABR in knowing that they were part of something really worthwhile and important.
